Ben Foster issues “angry” Wrexham rallying cry ahead of Ryan Reynolds’ biggest ever game

Having attended Wrexham’s defeat against Halifax in the press box, I decided to wait in the mixed zone afterwards, in the hope Ben Foster would come out and speak to me. Fortunately, there were no other journalists around at the time, meaning I was able to speak to Foster exclusively.

Once I managed to pull him to one side, I asked him about the defeat, but spoke to him more about the next game, which was that blockbuster, title-deciding clash against Notts County. With that game three days later on the Bank Holiday Monday, I felt it would be best to angle my piece as a preview ahead of the Notts match, given there would be more interest ahead of that match.

I produced the piece on the Saturday, ready to be published on the Sunday morning, giving it more than 24 hours live beforehand. As for the headline, I spiced it up to include Ryan Reynolds, Wrexham and Ben Foster – who are the most widely-searched names on Google when it comes to Wrexham.

Luckily, the exclusive piece managed to perform well, clocking 25,000 views within the first 48 hours. While at the game, I wrote an on-the-whistle match report, while also producing a quotes-led piece from Phil Parkinson heading into the Bank Holiday Monday game against Notts. Every piece performed well, given the continued interest in Wrexham.
