Following a long transfer saga, Declan Rice’s £105million move to Arsenal was finally confirmed on Saturday, July 15. Before the move was announced, I had prepped a breaker as we had a feeling that Rice was going to be unveiled anytime soon. I managed to build a 500-word piece, ready to add the relevant quotes and images. I prepared myself in the best possible way to publish the story as soon as the transfer was confirmed by the club, and once it was, the piece went live straight away.
Quotes were inserted from the third paragraph downwards after a strong first and second par to entice the reader in. Then I tailed the piece into a feature once the news-side of it was finished, detailing Rice’s career and his rise from the West Ham academy. I felt that added a nice bit of colour to what would have just been a straight news piece.
Looking at the headline, BREAKING text was included for the first five minutes alongside the rest of the HL, which detailed the figure of the transfer and hinted Arsenal’s summer spending this summer. As for the tweet, I decided to make it as simple as possible and I feel like that was an effective way to catch the readers’ attention.
